After suffering a bone bruise and MCL sprain, Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson is officially doubtful for Week 2. It was unlikely that he would play so soon after the injury, but there was some optimism around his potential to play through the injury. After not practicing all week, it is very very unlikely that Ferguson suits up.
With Ferguson out, the Cowboys will turn to two young TEs to take his spot in 2023 second round pick Luke Schoonmaker who did not pick up a target last week and undrafted rookie Brevyn Spann-Ford who ran more routes than Schoonmaker.
Neither should be in starting lineups this week. Spann-Ford is likely to lead the Cowboys TEs in targets (likely only a few) while Schoonmaker has the best potential of the group to score a TD as that was his role in college at Michigan.
Until Ferguson is back, however, the Cowboys TEs are pretty unusable.
Ferguson will likely try to come back for Week 3, but don't expect him to play for at least another week or two. With the bone bruise and MCL sprain, three weeks is the most common timetable which would put him on track to play in Week 4.
