Chargers RB Omarion Hampton rushed 15 times for 48 yards (3.2 YPC) in Friday night's win over the Chiefs. He added 13 more yards on two receptions. It was a tough test for the rookie against a Kansas City defense that limited RBs to 3.8 yards per carry last year. But we weren't very impressed by Hampton in this one. He showed nice burst and speed when he found a lane. But he didn't elude or avoid many tackles. In fact, NFL Next Gen Stats tracked him for -1.67 rush yards over expected per attempt. For comparison, D'Andre Swift finished dead last in that category last year at -0.69.
There was some good news to come out of the opener for Hampton: He dominated backfield work.
It'd be tough for Hampton to bust if that workload holds up all year. But RB Najee Harris is a threat to take more work as he comes off his eye injury. Harris played just 19% of the offensive snaps in the opener, finishing with one carry and one target.
We'll continue to keep a close eye on this backfield, as well as Hampton's performance. We're not panicking after the rookie's first game against a stout run defense. But he'll need to be better to keep Harris at bay.
Hampton gets a much easier Week 2 draw against the Raiders, followed by another tough test against the Broncos in Week 3.
