Jameson Williams Gets There But in Tenuous Fashion

We're all familiar with the boom/bust potential of Willams' game, including the speed that can deliver gains like he registered against the Bears.

But Williams drew a target on just 14.3% of Jared Goff's pass attempts Sunday. That followed a mere 12.8% target share in the opener. And the Week 2 contest only found one Lions player -- Amon-Ra St. Brown -- exceeding Williams' four targets.

Is that a positive (fewer teammates to climb past for a better share next time)? Or a negative (even without targets being spread around, Williams couldn't load up)?

Really, it's probably neutral.

We know this is a crowded offense that will cause Williams' target counts to vary. We know that St. Brown's capable of dominating target shares like he had Sunday in any given game. And the Bears matchup favored St. Brown by finding Chicago slot CB Kyler Gordon inactive.

Williams needs to improve on his 13.4% target share through two weeks to be trustable in our lineups. A Week 3 visit to Baltimore should be tougher and potentially drive more Detroit passing volume. But it could also be a tough environment for Williams' targets, which generally require more time for him to work downfield.

Ultimately, Williams retains plenty of upside. And we're just two games into not only the season, but also the first year of new OC John Morton.

Williams' usage will be worth tracking as we proceed.
