Justin Fields Benched Again As Jets Fall To 0-7

        Justin Fields Headshot

Less than a week after saying he was not benching QB Justin Fields, HC Aaron Glenn pulled the plug on Fields after another horrendous start. Glenn benched Fields at halftime after the Jets accumulated 25 net passing yards and 3 points. Tyrod Taylor relieved Fields and brought some semblance of the forward pass to New York's offense, but Taylor tossed a pair of INTs in relief.

The Jets likely had this game circled as a legitimate shot to secure their first win and Glenn's defense did all they could. holding Carolina to 177 passing yards and a single TD. But the abysmal QB play was too much for New York to overcome and the Jets fell to 0-7.

The fact that the Jets told Aaron Rodgers, who just threw 4 TDs on Thursday, that they weren't interested in his services and paid Fields $30 million guaranteed is the most Jets thing ever.

In his half of action, Fields completed 6-of-12 attempts for 46 yards. He rushed 4 times for 22 yards. He was also sacked 3 times, losing 21 yards and compiling a QB Rating of 59.7.

The Jets had 6 first-half drives with Fields under center:

        • 6 plays, 22 yards, turnover on downs

        • 6 plays, 17 yards, punt

        • 7 plays, 33 yards, 34-yard field goal

        • 3 plays, 3 yards, punt

        • 3 plays, 7 yards, punt

        • 7 plays, 13 yards, end of half

Tyrod Taylor entered the game in the third quarter and again showed more willingness to stand in the pocket and attempt passes. In the third quarter, Taylor's 2 drives accounted for 62 yards and 16 plays but no points.

Taylor threw for 126 yards in the second half, but completed just 10 of his 22 attempts and tossed a pair of INTs. While Taylor does a better job as a pocket passer, his 25.9 QB Rating was markedly worse than Fields.

Both QBs were throwing to one of the thinnest receiving corps in football that was missing No. 1 WR Garrett Wilson.

But it feels like Fields' time as and NFL starter may be over.

Up next, the winless Jets travel to Cincinnati, followed by a home date with the Browns.
