Niners Edge Mykel Williams tore the ACL in his right knee in Sunday's win over the Giants. HC Kyle Shanahan told reporters Monday that there's some damage to the lateral meniscus in the knee as well but that Williams suffered no further ligament damage.
What They're Saying
Shanahan: "They feel good about it, that he'll come back from it, that his career will be fine, he'll heal great."
More from Shanahan: "I thought he was a guy who kind of needed a bye week more than anyone. So I'm just really disappointed that we're not able to continue to develop him through the year. Because we've got a hell of a player who's going to really figure this out in the run game and the pass game."
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
Williams started all nine games and played 65+% of snaps every week until leaving Sunday's contest early. But his season ends with just 1 sack and 3 total QB hits.
So the injury doesn't mean much IDP impact. And it also shouldn't mean much impact for a 49ers defense that hasn't proved very good for either fantasy or real-football purposes.
San Francisco hopes to get Edge Bryce Huff back from a hamstring injury this week. The team also recently acquired DL Keion White from the Patriots and signed Edge Clelin Ferrell to the practice squad. (White and Ferrell both played against the Giants).
The Niners could also be a candidate to add one more D-lineman, especially with Edge Yetur Gross-Matos currently on IR (and Nick Bosa, of course, already out with an ACL tear).
Dynasty Impact
I've mentioned on multiple occasions since he was a prospect that I'm skeptical of Williams' NFL outlook after he spent his college career disappointing vs. his five-star recruit status.
It's nice that Shanahan expects big things. But this injury's obviously a setback for at least the start of 2026.
Williams doesn't become a must-drop if you drafted him in dynasty. But he's droppable where you don't have the IR space to stash. (And I continue to not expect big things.)
Waiver Wire Targets
I wouldn't target any 49ers linemen for the Week 10 home date with the Rams. After that, though, sit more attractive matchups with the Cardinals, Panthers, Browns, and Titans (after the Week 14 bye).
Huff, White, and Edge Sam Okuayinonu could be options for those weeks in deeper IDP leagues.
Ferrell supplied a sack against the Giants but also played just 32% of the snaps. combine that with a low-production career, and I'd skip him on waivers.
