Jets’ third-string RB Isaiah Davis hasn’t practiced in two weeks as he recovers from an ankle injury, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.
Cimini: “RB Isaiah Davis (ankle) still not practicing after two weeks. Still walking with a slight limp. Have to wonder if he’s a short-term IR candidate.”
An injury to a third-string RB usually isn’t all that fantasy relevant. In fact, it normally isn’t at all.
But not with the Jets.
If the preseason usage is any indication, HC Aaron Glenn appears to be very serious about his intentions of using all three RBs this year. During the team’s opener, RB Breece Hall rotated with Braelon Allen on early downs, while Davis took the third down snaps. Davis appears to be the favorite to earn snaps on long down and distances, as well as the two-minute drill. Yet even with Davis sidelined for New York’s second preseason contest, Hall still didn’t play on third down.
Okay then.
Preseason isn’t gospel, but it certainly raises eyebrows. After logging 69% of the team’s third downs last season, Hall has yet to play on third down during the 2025 exhibition games. If Cimini is onto something about Davis starting the season on injured reserve, it should, in theory, create more pass-catching opportunities for Hall, which are becoming more and more important by the day.
Early down work and potentially goal line chances could be shared with Allen, making it imperative Hall earns targets and third-down opportunities. The good news? New York has a glaring need for a secondary pass-catcher behind WR Garrett Wilson, and QB Justin Fields posted the league's third-highest check down rate last year (17.3%). A potential Davis absence should solidify Hall’s playing time to open the year, but the fourth-year RB still carries concerns on draft day.
