The Indianapolis Colts have signed veteran QB Philip Rivers to their practice squad. With QB Riley Leonard week-to-week with a knee injury, Rivers bolsters the QB depth in case he is needed. He will compete with QB Brett Rypien, also on the practice squad, for the back-up job. But, it isn’t out of the question for Rivers to start at some point with the Colts trying to claw their way into the playoffs.
What They're Saying
Adam Schefter of ESPN: "44-year-old Philip Rivers, who has not played in the NFL since the 2020 COVID season, is signing to the QB-needy Indianapolis Colts practice squad."
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
Rivers hasn’t played since 2020 when he started 16 games for the Colts. Rivers was already showing massive cracks in his arm strength due to age, so this isn’t necessarily an upgrade or fix for the Colts QB problems.
He currently works as a high school football coach in Alabama, but will take one more shot at the NFL and a Super Bowl run.
Rivers is not rosterable at this point, even in superflex leagues. If he ends up starting, he will likely be the worst starting QB in the league. Targeting fantasy defenses facing Colts should be lucrative for your fantasy playoff run.
