Kyler Murray's Preseason Player Analysis

2024 Summary

Production & Fantasy Finishes

Murray completed 372 passes (7th) on 541 attempts (9th) for 3,851 yards (11th), 21 TDs (13th), and 11 INTs.

On the ground, he added 572 rushing yards (4th among QBs) and five rushing TDs (6th) on 82 attempts. He scored 363.8 fantasy points (QB10) and averaged 21.4 points per game (QB14), with seven top-12 finishes and only two games outside the top 24.

Usage & Role

Murray’s rushing involvement hit a career low in 2024:

  • 4.6 rush attempts per game
  • 2.2 designed runs per game

He was primarily a pocket passer in OC Drew Petzing’s system, which became more aggressive post-bye (Week 11), shifting from a -5.1% pass rate over expected to +6.7%.

His dropbacks per game increased, and the Cardinals leaned more into Kyler’s arm than legs late in the year.

Efficiency Metrics

Murray remained quietly efficient last year:

  • 75.9 PFF pass grade (15th)
  • 75.6% adjusted completion rate (18th)
  • 2.2% turnover-worthy play rate (10th-lowest)
  • 2.1% completion rate over expected (17th)

He ranked seventh in expected passing TDs (28.3) but tied for just 13th in actual TDs (21), suggesting some positive regression ahead.

Offensive Context

Arizona’s offense evolved throughout the season:

  • Pre-bye: -5.1% PROE, 50.5% pass rate
  • Post-bye: +6.7% PROE, 61.3% pass rate

The team finished 12th in total plays and leaned on an offensive line that was in the top half of the NFL in both pass and run blocking success rate, per ESPN.

That allowed Murray time in the pocket (2.87 seconds to throw, 12th-most) and kept him clean with the 9th-best sack rate.

Historical Production & Trends

Murray has now posted top-12 fantasy points per game in all six of his NFL seasons.

His rushing volume continues to trend down from a peak of 8.3 attempts per game in 2020 to just 4.6 in 2024, but his red-zone effectiveness improved: 5 rush TDs on 1.4 expected (overperforming after two straight years of underachievement).

Injury History

After returning from ACL surgery in 2023, Murray played a full 17-game season in 2024 without major injury.

He should be fully healthy coming into 2025.

2025 Expectations

Projected Role & Competition

Murray is the clear No. 1 QB in Arizona with no competition.

Jacoby Brissett signed a two-year deal this offseason to serve as the primary backup. Third-year QB Clayton Tune is also still on the roster.

Supporting Cast

Murray will benefit from consistency in his supporting cast.

Second-year WR Marvin Harrison Jr. will look to take the next step to becoming an elite receiving option. WRs Michael Wilson and Zay Jones also return.

Trey McBride became the highest-paid TE in the NFL with a new deal this offseason. They also return blocking TE Tip Reiman.

RB James Conner appears locked into the lead back role with second-year RB Trey Benson still developing.

All five OL starters return in OTs Paris Johnson Jr. and Jonah Williams and interior linemen Evan Brown, Hjalte Froholdt, and Isaiah Adams.

Last year, the O-line had a 60% pass block win rate (16th) and 72% run blocking win rate (11th)

Coaching & Offensive Scheme

OC Drew Petzing's system blended horizontal spacing with occasional deep shots and leaned heavily on yards after catch.

The Cardinals ranked 21st in the NFL in total plays and 19th in pace.

Their pass rate was only 22nd in the NFL, but they were 11th in neutral pass rate.

The team continued to focus on running with James Conner finishing 11th in rush attempts and third in yards per carry.

Kyler Murray Plans To Run More In 2025

Cardinals QB Kyler Murray said in a recent interview that he "feels like" he needs to run more in 2025. "I'm open to running more next year," he added. "Just because it's such a weapon. ... It's part of the emphasis going into next season."

Cardinals TE Trey McBride has been signed to a contract extension making him the highest paid TE in the NFL. He inked a four-year, $76 million deal with $43 million guaranteed. McBride caught 111 passes on 147 targets last season for 1,146 yards and two TDs. Entering his fourth year, McBride's elite TE ability is a key part of the Cardinals offense.

Cardinals QB Kyler Murray attempted a season-high 45 passes in Sunday's loss to the Vikings. But his production proved limited. Murray completed a solid 68.9% of his passes but at just 5.78 yards per attempt, his lowest rate since Week 7. Murray also threw just 1 TD pass. It was his fourth straight game with one or fewer and 10th game among 12 this season that included 1 TD pass or fewer. Murray added 48 rushing yards, his largest tally since Week 7.
