Bottom Line

Williams’ boom-or-bust projection remains in play.

Part of that stems from his return from a torn ACL. Of course, Aaron Rodgers’ recovery from an Achilles tear is another huge component.

Given the variables, it’s likely we see a slow start for the former Charger. But from mid-season on, he may pop as the red zone threat New York desperately needs.

We’ll track his rehab closely this summer. For now, Williams is a fine bench stash.

What We Learned Last Year

  • Williams tallied 19 catches, 249 yards, and 1 TD in less than 3 full games.
    • He saw 26 targets over that stretch – right on par with Keenan Allen.
  • In Week 3, the 29-year-old sustained a left ACL tear.
    • He underwent surgery on October 25.
    • This came after Williams missed time in 2022 with a pair of ankle injuries.
  • Williams played at least 15 games from 2018-2021.

What to Expect in 2024

  • HC Robert Saleh said this offseason that he's "very confident" Williams will be ready for Week 1.
    • Williams was eased into training camp – hardly ideal as he looks to gain the trust of Aaron Rodgers. He came off the PUP list on Aug. 7.
  • When healthy, Williams will have a shot to emerge as the No. 2 option behind target hog Garrett Wilson.
    • The Jets don’t have another notable WR of his size. Williams brings ball-winner ability both inside and outside the red zone.
    • Wilson, despite his clear talent, enters 2024 with a TD rate of just 3.9%.
    • The Jets used a Round 3 pick on Malachi Corley, a run-after-catch specialist whose skill set complements Williams’.
  • Williams’ outlook is directly tied to the health of Rodgers, who’s coming off a Week 1 Achilles tear. He’s on track to be 100% for the opener.
  • The 2023 Jets, despite QB issues, ranked 5th in pass rate; 13th in pass rate over expected. Look for their pass-centric ways to remain following the return of Rodgers and OC Nathaniel Hackett.

Allen Lazard, WR NYJ

3:25pm EDT 10/25/24

Allen Lazard Doubtful For Week 8

Jets WR Allen Lazard (chest) is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game vs. the Patriots. His absence should give Mike Williams a crack at No. 3 WR duties, but he’d still be a desperation fantasy play with WRs Garrett Wilson and Davante Adams likely to dominate targets.

The Jets will make WR Mike Williams available for trade, according to insider Jordan Schultz. Williams has been running as New York's No. 3 WR and will now be No. 4 on the depth chart with Davante Adams' arrival. Williams hasn't looked 100% recovered from last year's torn ACL, struggling to draw targets or get on the same page as QB Aaron Rodgers. Leaving New York could only be good news for his fantasy value. We'll see if the Jets find a trade partner.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the Raiders are finalizing a deal to send WR Davante Adams to the Jets for a conditional draft pick that could become a second-rounder at peak.

Todd Downing will replace Nathaniel Hackett as the Jets' play-caller, interim HC Jeff Ulbrich announced on Thursday. While defensive-minded HC Robert Saleh was canned earlier this week, the offense has been the real problem in New York. The Jets rank 23rd in points, 27th in total yards, and 27th in yards per play. That's largely on Hackett, who has deployed a stale offense. We're just not sure it'll get much better with Downing. He's spent three seasons as an NFL OC, one with the Raiders and two with the Titans. Those offenses ranked 17th, 17th, and 30th in total yards. QB Aaron Rodgers is on board with the move, according to insider Connor Hughes. We'll get our first look at Downing's offense in Monday night's Jets vs. Bills game.

Jets WR Mike Williams caught his only target in Week 2. But he climbed to a 65% snap rate after playing just 18% of the snaps in the opener. HC Robert Saleh said that Williams "feels really good" and is ready for more work.

Williams' Week 3 ACL tear complicates his dynasty outlook. The almost 30-year-old latched on with the Jets in March, giving him a strong landing spot for short-term opportunity. We'll track Williams' rehab closely.
