Multiple Jets beat writers have WR Xavier Gipson ahead of WR Malachi Corley on the depth chart heading to training camp. Those two are battling for the slot role between boundary WRs Garrett Wilson and Mike Williams.
The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt: "There’s been an assumption that Corley will be the Day 1 starter as the slot receiver considering how aggressive the Jets were in attempting to trade up for him in the second round, ultimately getting him in the third. He might reach that point, maybe even at the start of the season. But Xavier Gipson might have something to say about it. The second-year receiver made plays throughout OTAs and minicamp, and seems to have taken a leap forward after a year of NFL experience, and a year in the Jets offense.
Jets X-Factor's Robby Sabo also believes Gipson is ahead of Corley "as of this moment."
This battle is far from over, of course. We'd still bet on Corley finishing this season with more targets than Gipson.
But the Gipson buzz seems legit. Rosenblatt wrote back in early April that the Jets were "extremely high" on him. Any tangible involvement from Gipson in the passing game would make it even tougher for Corley to make a 2024 fantasy impact behind RB Breece Hall and WRs Garrett Wilson and Mike Williams.
Corley is sitting just 74th among WRs in best-ball ADP, so it's tough to call him a bad pick at cost. But there are other WRs we prefer in that range, including Marvin Mims, Wan'Dale Robinson, and Demarcus Robinson.
Gipson is still barely on the fantasy radar, worth no more than a last-round pick in drafts of 20+ rounds.
We're not downgrading Corley's dynasty value based on this news. He's a relatively raw receiver who never looked like a strong bet to make an immediate impact. His early-career production figures to come from screens, jet sweeps, and other plays to take advantage of his skills with the ball in his hands.
