Jared Wiley Headed for Surprise Impact?

Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports says Chiefs rookie TE Jared Wiley is "already getting a lot of play with the starters" in team workouts -- including red-zone opportunities. Wiley's obviously not going to challenge TE Travis Kelce's standing anytime soon. But there's room for him to compete with Noah Gray for the No. 2 spot. Gray played 52.4% of K.C.'s offensive snaps last season, thanks in part to Kelce missing two games. Gray also finished sixth on the team in targets and fourth in receptions.

What They're Saying

Kelce on his rookie teammate in June: "Wiley is doing a great job. He’s got a lot of upside. He’s a smart guy and I would say he’s a lot further along than I was as a rookie, in terms of just understanding the offense and really seeing the field. … It’s fun to watch him take off.”

HC Andy Reid on Wiley: “He comes from a passing offense — a couple of different ones, but good passing offenses. He’s got a nice feel for the game — and he’s a big target. He’s a good player.”

Wiley spent three years at Texas before finishing his college career with two seasons at TCU.

2024 Fantasy Football Impact

There's limited redraft potential here. Even if he wins the No. 2 job heading into the regular season, Wiley would obviously see limited work as long as Kelce's healthy.

And even if he's shoved to third on the depth chart, Gray would likely stay more involved than last year's No. 3, Blake Bell (nine targets).

Dynasty Impact

Here's where Wiley looks interesting. Kelce still hasn't sounded like he's on the verge of retirement this spring. But he turns 35 in October.

If Wiley continues to develop, he could have a shot at succeeding Kelce has Patrick Mahomes' next lead TE.

That would obviously be a nice setup for fantasy upside. And young TEs nearly always need the development time that playing behind Kelce should afford.
