Expanded Role Coming For Greg Dortch?

Cardinals insider Bob McManaman writes that WR Greg Dortch's "role is expected to expand in 2024." McManaman projects Dortch as the team's starting slot receiver.

        What They're Saying

“I feel like Dortch is unguardable,” QB Kyler Murray said in early June. “One-on-one, knowing where to be in the zones, he’s just got the nuance and savvy to him that you want in a receiver and not everybody has it. I say that because it’s not very common. He’s 5'7. If he was 6'3, he’d be a top 5 pick in the NFL draft. That’s what I think. That’s the type of football player that he is. And again, he loves the game. I’d go to war with Greg every day.”

        2024 Fantasy Football Impact

Dortch has reached a 70% snap rate in just 10 games through four NFL seasons, all coming over the last two years. But he's been productive in those games, averaging:

        • 8.3 targets
        • 6.1 catches
        • 64.4 yards
        • 0.3 TDs

His 14.3 PPR points per game in those contests would have ranked 21st among WRs last year.

It's tough to see Dortch reaching that level of volume this season behind WR Marvin Harrison Jr. and TE Trey McBride. But he could garner enough targets in an improved Cardinals offense to be a best-ball asset and managed-leagued spot starter.

        Other Winners & Losers

If Dortch is Arizona's slot receiver, that'd leave WRs Michael Wilson and Zay Jones fighting for the other outside spot opposite Harrison. Wilson was an effective deep threat for the Cardinals last year, averaging a big 14.9 yards per catch and 9.7 yards per target. Jones is coming off a disappointing 2023 season and got just $2.25 million on his one-year deal. But he also tallied 82 catches and a PPR WR26 finish in 2022.

The winner of this battle will be worth considering late in fantasy drafts. The loser will be waiver-wire fodder.
