Vikings Set to Bring Back Cam Akers?

        Cam Akers Headshot

The Vikings are expected to re-sign RB Cam Akers, according to Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press. That depends, of course, on Akers passing a physical. He joined Minnesota last September but went down for the season in Week 9 with a torn left Achilles' tendon. Over his six games with the team, Akers reached 29% snap shares four times, with a high of 39% in Week 7. He worked ahead of Ty Chandler over that span but behind then-starter Alexander Mattison.

        2024 Fantasy Football Impact

Akers will need to prove there's any reason to expect a 2024 fantasy impact.

Chandler showed once he finally got the opportunity late last year that he should have been involved on offense much earlier. He easily beat Akers in yards per carry (4.5 to 3.6), Pro Football Focus rushing grade (77.2 to 65.5), and rushing success rate (45.1% to 39.5%), among other metrics.

Minnesota has also since signed Aaron Jones, clearly with the intent of making him the backfield leader.

Akers has been a mediocre pro even at full health ... and struggled to stay healthy. He'd likely battle Myles Gaskin for a roster spot.

Akers won't even be worth attention as an end-of-draft differentiator for best ball tournament rosters.

Injury History: New Developments & Historical Context

Akers previously tore his right Achilles' tendon in the offseason ahead of 2021, his second year with the Rams.

He made a remarkably quick return then, taking the field just 5.5 months after his injury. And the Rams deployed him as their lead back for the playoff run that ended with a Super Bowl win over the Bengals.

But Akers averaged just 2.6 yards per rush across 67 attempts in those playoffs, ceding some work to Sony Michel and Darrell Henderson along the way.
