Commanders HC Dan Quinn suggested multiple times this past week that there's an ongoing competition for the team's No. 2 and No. 3 WR spots. After Saturday night's preseason game, Quinn said that it might wind up being a rotation with WRs Jahan Dotson, Dyami Brown, and Olamide Zaccheaus.
Quinn: "We’re trying to feature all the things that players can do. ... I love Jahan taking the deep routes and in-breakers ... I felt Dyami getting on top of people and being strong. I've seen [Zaccheaus] working the slot, aggressive hands. And so, by that position and finding what players can do, that's our job to put them into that spot. But I don't see it as 'one person has to be into this space.' I just want the guys to be absolutely flying and at their best and competing and playing with urgency. It's not about a number at a position."
While Quinn's words certainly mean something, Washington's preseason usage seems more important. In Saturday night's game vs. Miami, Dotson ran a route on 11 of QB Jayden Daniels' 12 dropbacks compared to seven routes for Brown and four for Zaccheaus.
We'll continue to keep an eye on the situation, but Dotson remains a fine pick at his 13th-round, WR61 ADP.
Brown looks likely to open the season as a field-stretching, No. 3 WR and is worth a look at the end of best-ball drafts.
We'd expect WR Luke McCaffrey to eventually pass Zaccheaus for the No. 4 spot on this depth chart, but the rookie will not be an early-season factor.
