The Packers are releasing K Anders Carlson, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. That leaves Greg Joseph as the lead in-house candidate to open the season. But Green Bay might not be done considering kicker options.
HC Matt LaFleur after Saturday's preseason finale, when asked whether his kicker is already on the roster: "That’s not even a question for me, to be honest with you. I think we’ve got a really good sample size, and then we’ll see what happens, just around the league."
Carlson wasn't very good last year. He missed six of 33 FG attempts, including four of eight from the 40-49-yard range. Worse: Carlson missed five of 39 extra-point attempts.
Joseph remains on the roster as of this writing. But Minnesota let him go after he hit just 79.4% of FG attempts and 90.5% of extra points over the past two seasons.
Don't bother drafting a Green Bay kicker for now. We'll see how the position settles ahead of Week 1.
The Packers don't look particularly intriguing for Week 1 kicker usage. They sit tied for just 12th in Vegas-implied point total.
Joseph replaces Carlson in our kicker rankings for now. Don't expect any Green Bay kicker to climb inside the top 20.
