NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that the Chiefs are signing RB Kareem Hunt. He'll join the practice squad initially, but Pelissero adds that Hunt "should have a chance to play soon."
We'll go ahead and bet that Hunt didn't join the Chiefs simply to linger on the practice squad. He has likely been promised at least a shot at making the game-day roster. When? We'll see.
The Chiefs' post-Isiah Pacheco backfield currently looks split between mostly unproven Carson Steele and proven-limited Samaje Perine. Clyde Edwards-Helaire remains on the non-football illness list for at least two more games, with no guarantee he'll be ready to return after that.
So there's room for Hunt to earn a role quickly. And that's enough to make him a potential deep stash in some fantasy leagues. But don't get too excited about him.
Hunt posted career lows last year in yards after contact per carry and missed tackles forced per carry. His Pro Football Focus elusive rating tanked. And he ranked 48th among 49 qualifiers in Next Gen Stat's rush yards over expected per attempt.
If Hunt does make the game-day roster, he'll just further crowd an unclear fill-in situation.
Primary takeaway: Be wary of over-trusting any Chiefs RB right now.
Steele and Perine aren't "losers" just yet, but we'll be watching to see what HC Andy Reid and others say about Hunt's potential role.
We're targeting Steele ahead of Perine and both ahead of Hunt on waivers this week. Check out more Week 3 waiver wire pickups.
