Police arrested Patriots S Jabrill Peppers on Saturday, charging him with assault and cocaine possession, NFL.com reports. The charges allegedly stem from an altercation that left a victim needing EMS treatment at the scene.
NFL.com: "Peppers will be charged with assault and battery; assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; strangulation; and possession of a Class "B" substance believed to be cocaine, police said."
HC Jerod Mayo on Monday: "He called me that morning. I knew what was going on. We've informed the NFL of what was going on and we're still gathering information."
Team statement: "We are aware of an incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend in which the police are currently investigating. We will have no further comment at this time."
Peppers faces arraignment Monday. I'll be watching for more details here. This seems like the kind of case that could lead to swift action -- potentially even threatening Peppers' status with the team.
The safety missed Sunday's loss to the Dolphins with a shoulder injury. But the team initially listed him as questionable after limited practices Thursday and Friday. Then it downgraded Peppers to out on Saturday.
That timeline -- especially with Mayo saying he heard from Peppers that morning -- sure seems to indicate it was more than just the shoulder sidelining the safety.
Jaylinn Hawkins would likely fill in should Peppers miss further time.
