Saints QB Derek Carr is expected to miss "multiple games" with the oblique injury he suffered in Monday night's loss to the Chiefs, NFL Network reports. He'll likely miss this weekend's game vs. the Bucs and the following Thursday's game against the Broncos. It sounds like he'll have a chance to be back for Week 8. New Orleans' bye isn't until Week 12.
NFL Network's Mike Garafolo: "Derek Carr is as competitive as they come, so he’ll push to play. But the thought is the Saints, doctors and athletic training staff will take the decision out of his hands, as his oblique injury is significant."
QB Spencer Rattler is a "strong candidate" to start in Carr's place this weekend, according to NFL Network. QB Jake Haener was Carr's backup in Kansas City, but Rattler seemingly gives New Orleans more upside.
Rattler was a five-star recruit and the No. 1 pro-style QB in the 2019 class. He had a rocky three seasons at Oklahoma but settled in at South Carolina the last two, throwing for 6,212 yards on a 67.5% completion rate and 7.8 yards per attempt. Rattler wasn't very good this preseason, though, completing 53% of his passes at 5.3 yards per attempt.
While he brings exciting arm talent, we're talking about a fifth-round rookie. Rattler is likely to be a significant downgrade from Carr for the Saints' offense.
