Former 49ers RB Elijah Mitchell has signed a one-year deal worth up to $3.5 million with the Kansas City Chiefs. Mitchell becomes the probable back-up to Isiah Pacheco with only he and Carson Steele currently under contract. It is potentially good news for Pacheco as the Chiefs may be looking more for insurance for him than replacing him as the starter.
Jordan Schultz: "The Chiefs are signing RB Elijah Mitchell worth up to $3.5m."
With only Pacheco and Steele under contract, Mitchell will currently slot into the depth chart behind Pacheco.
Mitchell has been effective when he has played for the 49ers, but injuries have derailed his opportunities.
The Chiefs are still interested in retaining Kareem Hunt.
The one-year deal certainly doesn't guarantee that Mitchell will make the team, but he does fit the offense.
This could be good news for Isiah Pacheco as the continued starter. With Mitchell being the first RB domino for the Chiefs, they are likely looking to bolster the back half of the room than find someone to compete with Pachedo.
With more free agency and the NFL Draft to go, it isn't 100%, but Pacheco feels locked into the top role.
