The Saints are Paying Juwan Johnson How Much?

The Saints have agreed to a three-year deal with TE Juwan Johnson. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that it'll pay $30.75 million, with a max value of $34.5 million and $21.25 million guaranteed

        2025 Fantasy Football Impact

If you're ever wondering why the Saints always seem to be in cap trouble, here's an example.

Johnson's been a fine player to date. Last year, for example, he finished 21st among TEs in PPR points per game. And 2022 proved even better, when his career-high scoring average ranked 17th at the position.

Of course, the Saints play real football instead of fantasy. So let's check Johnson's rankings in some other categories, courtesy of Saints Wire's John Sigler ...

Receiving yards per game ranks among TEs over the past three years:

        • 21st (in 2022)
        • 24th
        • 22nd

        Yards after catch per reception:

        • 20th
        • 37th
        • 33rd

        Receiving success rate:

        • 21st
        • 31st
        • 23rd

Johnson's now the 10th-highest paid TE in annual contract average. Perhaps that points to more targets -- Johnson ranked just 22nd among TEs in target share last year -- but it's a gross overpay.

Don't compound the issue by altering your view of Johnson's fantasy outlook to match his salary.

        Dynasty Impact

The contract means more to Johnson's dynasty outlook than it does redraft.

The 28-year-old (29 in mid-September) will be locked in with the Saints for at least the next two years. That's an offense without target hogs and with -- seemingly -- little money to import much receiving talent.

So Johnson's a fine guy to keep stashed, especially in formats that downplay reception scoring.
