The Giants have seleted Edge Abdul Carter with the No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft. Carter tallied 12 sacks last season among an FBS-leading 24 tackles for loss. That came in the first among his three years that saw him move primarily to the edge. Carter delivered 11 TFLs and 6.5 sacks as a true freshman, despite seeing limited pass-rush opportunities.
Carter might see his snaps limited initially by the Giants having Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux in place.
Thibodeaux's heading into the fourth year of his rookie deal, but the Giants have announced that they'll be exercising his fifth-year option. That means the team will likely have all three for at least 2025.
That option year also makes it quite possible that the Giants have all three through 2026, which could limit Carter's playing time through his first two seasons. We'll see what coaches say about the rookie's initial role.
For his rookie season, Carter will likely belong in DL3 range of IDP drafts. He'll be a risky option, especially in leagues that don't award points for categories such as tackles for loss, pressures, and QB hits.
The long-term upside here is exciting. Carter belongs among the top IDP rookie selections and should go in DL1 range in dynasty startup drafts.
