49ers Make Iffy Pick in Mykel Williams

The 49ers spent the 11th pick of the NFL Draft on Georgia Edge Mykel Williams. The former five-star recruit arrived with the talent and flashed it in a solid true freshman season. That included 7 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and 28 total tackles, which wound up as a career high for his college years. And that's the problem: He never progressed. Williams dealt with an ankle injury that he tweaked multiple times in 2024, which likely limited his production. But it's disappointing that such a heralded recruit -- and a talent that clearly impressed -- leaves Georgia with no truly impressive production. The positive: Williams hasn't even turned 21 yet.
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
Williams will need to prove that he'll matter for IDP leagues before I'm pumping him up. There's opportunity in San Francisco, but they also have enough on the edge -- led by Nick Bosa and Yetur Gross-Matos -- that they don't need to rush Williams.
Going 11th overall will help Williams' projection a bit, but don't expect him to sit high for 2025 IDP redraft leagues.
Dynasty Impact
You can similarly expect Williams to sit low in our dynasty rankings vs. the likely consensus. Why? I'm simply wary of a talented guy who doesn't prove it in college. The opposition's about to get a whole lot tougher.
Shane and I agreed on that wariness over Williams' outlook in our recent podcast on the edge prospects.
