Broncos RB R.J. Harvey has played well in the passing game in OTAs so far, according to both his teammates and Denver media. Harvey caught a modest 39 balls over the last two seasons at Central Florida, although he averaged a big 12.9 yards per catch.
What They're Saying
QB Bo Nix: “You know he can run the ball, but I think it’s the other things that he’s (already) showing. Just the routes, (his) suddenness and quickness in his hands. I think all that’s really good to see."
The Athletic's Nick Kosmider: "In two practices open to the media this offseason, Harvey has been given ample work in the passing game as he prepares for the kind of multifaceted responsibilities required of running backs in Payton’s offense. The early returns have been promising, with the obvious caveat that he hasn’t yet put on pads and been asked to stonewall a blitzing linebacker."
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
Harvey is the clear favorite to lead Broncos RBs in carries this season. His role in the passing game is more unclear, especially considering his struggles in pass protection in college. Harvey ranked 155th among 161 qualifying NCAA RBs in Pro Football Focus' 2024 pass-blocking grades.
If he can prove reliable in that department, though, there's big target upside here. HC Sean Payton's offenses have consistently ranked near the top of the league in RB targets and receptions. That includes last year, when the Broncos finished fourth with 95 RB receptions.
Harvey's passing-game role will be worth monitoring closely in training camp and preseason action.
