Panthers HC Dave Canales gave a detailed answer when asked about RB Rico Dowdle's role in the offense on Saturday. Canales said that Dowdle will give the offense "consistency ... when Chuba [Hubbard] needs to come out." But he also praised Dowdle's ability as a pass catcher and protector.
What They're Saying
The full quote from Canales: "It’s just about consistency. It’s about when Chuba [Hubbard] needs to come out, that we just continue on the same path, we can call the same plays. I think Rico is really special out of the backfield, as well, as a receiver and an amazing pass-protector. So, he really brings a lot to what we can do. I’m really glad we’ve got Rico here. It allows us to have that consistency we’re looking for.”

This is an interesting take from Canales.
For starters, it sounds like the Panthers view Dowdle, and not Trevor Etienne, as Hubbard's direct backup right now. It's not a big surprise that the veteran is ahead of the rookie at this point, but Etienne has depth-chart climbing to do in order to be the Hubbard handcuff.
Just as noteworthy is the praise for Dowdle's work in the passing game. That's an area in which Hubbard struggled mightily last year. He averaged just 4.0 yards per catch and ranked 36th among 37 qualifying RBs in yards per route and Pro Football Focus receiving grade.
Hubbard averaged 3.6 targets and 2.9 catches per game last year, but he could lose a big chunk of that work to Dowdle (and/or Etienne). It's a situation we'll be keeping a close eye on over the next month.
