Saints QB Spencer Rattler appears to be leading the battle despite some up-and-down play in training camp so far, according to WWL Radio's Jeff Nowak. He ran with the first team today. His competition, rookie Tyler Shough, has been fairly risk-averse over the first few days. Jake Haener is also in the mix. The situation remains unresolved.
What They're Saying
Jeff Nowak of WWL Radio: "Rattler gets 26 reps ... ups and downs, still feels like he's ahead in the QB battle. INTs aren't helping (CTD). Shough settling in. Made some nice timing throws today, still a bit too risk-averse for my liking, but there are worse things for rookies to be"
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
Rattler certainly has had a volatile training camp so far throwing interceptions along with TDs, but he appears to be the frontrunner with his time on the first team offense so far.
Rattler did struggle last season in spot starting duty. He started six games, winning none. He threw for 1,317 yards with four TDs and five INTs.
New HC Kellen Moore doesn't have ties to Rattler (or Haener) but the one year experience and arm talent of former five-star HS recruit Rattler may be the safest choice.
Of course, the Saints spent a second-round pick this past April on Shough, so we certainly could see him before the end of the year with enough progression.
The choice remains important for Saints' fantasy weapons like WRs Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed along with RB Alvin Kamara and TE Juwan Johnson.
We will continue monitoring the situation.
