The Bengals on Wednesday announced that they've released RB Zack Moss. It's not a shocking ending given that Moss averaged a career-low 3.3 yards per rush last year, suffered a season-ending neck injury, and then took a pay cut in the offseason. But it could tell us something about the 2025 backfield.
What They're Saying
Chris Roling of Bengals Wire: "The release of Moss comes as a mild surprise, as the veteran running back appeared on track to fully return from the neck injury that ended last season."
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
If Moss' neck hasn't been an issue this summer, then that suggests Cincinnati was just ready to move on from the player. And that part's not surprising.
Chase Brown took over the backfield after Moss went down, and the Bengals have indicated this offseason that they're quite comfy with him maintaining that lead. Behind Brown? We'll see how things sort out.
Cincinnati added only sixth-round rookie Tahj Brooks and near-30 veteran Samaje Perine.
Perine hasn't reached 100 carries in a season since his 2017 rookie campaign in Washington. He did play a significant receiving role when last with the Bengals, though, catching 65 passes over his final two seasons there -- despite sharing that backfield with Joe Mixon.
Don't be surprised if Perine claims some passing-game work this year as well. But Brooks has also reportedly "impressed early on" with his receiving work.
We'll see whether the Bengals feel compelled to add anyone else. For now, shedding Moss doesn't have much effect on Bengal placement in our RB rankings.
Barring another significant arrival, Brown appears well set up for touch volume in 2025.
