Chargers OC Greg Roman stated that rookie RB Omarion Hampton will be part of a Week 1 rotation, according to ESPN’s Kris Rhim, even if RB Najee Harris (eye) is unavailable.
What They're Saying
Rhim: “Greg Roman said that even if Najee Harris isn’t ready to go Week 1, RB Omarion Hampton will rotate with another back. Who that other back is, Roman says is wide open.”

Sure, Greg.
Yes, Hampton won’t play 100% of the snaps and handle every single touch. So if that qualifies as a “rotation,” then technically, Roman isn’t wrong. But even in his first NFL game, it’s hard to believe Hampton wouldn’t handle the majority of the work if Harris were unavailable.
If the Chargers had more talent in the backfield, maybe we’d buy it. But RBs Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins don’t exactly warrant double-digit touches.
Look at last season: RB JK Dobbins recorded 27 touches and logged 73% of the snaps in a game the Chargers were without RB Gus Edwards. And in games Dobbins didn’t leave early, he averaged 18.2 touches per game. Hampton is a rookie, but with first-round draft capital, he should see the bulk of the work in the event Harris isn’t ready for Week 1.
Harris reportedly did some “light jogging," but is facing an uphill battle to be ready for Week 1. Hampton, meanwhile, continues to climb up the ranks.
