Mack Wilson Might Finally Be an IDP Sleeper

        Mack Wilson Headshot

Cardinals LB Mack Wilson is wearing the green dot this season, meaning he's relaying defensive play calls in the huddle. LB Kyzir White filled that role for Arizona the past two seasons, but the team moved on from him this offseason. White remains on the open market, and the Cardinals imported Akeem Davis-Gaither on a two-year, $10 million deal.

        What They're Saying

HC Jonathan Gannon, a former defensive coordinator: "We kicked around the tires of what we wanted to do coming into this year, and we thought that he would do that well."

First of all, let's chuckle at Gannon's continued awkwardness. You don't "kick around tires," Coach. That would mean they're off the car. And, thus, kicking them would prove completely meaningless.

That aside, Gannon mentioned in that linked article from the end of July that the team likes to train multiple guys in the play-calling role. So the fact that Wilson's still handling those duties on Aug. 22 says we should expect him to enter the season wearing the dot.

IDP managers should care about that because it's a strong indicator the guy will stay on the field across sub packages and see full playing time. It doesn't make Wilson a lock to play 100% of the time, but it makes him likely to at least get close.

That's big for a guy who played 88% of snaps as a 2019 rookie for the Browns, but then fell short of 43% snap shares each of the next four years. Wilson rebounded to 75% last year in his first Cardinals season but trailed White.

This year, it looks like we should expect the 27-year-old to lead Davis-Gaither in playing time.

Wilson ranked just ninth among last year's Cardinals in solo tackles per snap, so he's no lock to deliver meaningful fantasy production. But full playing time would give him a much better shot.

I've boosted Wilson and dinged Davis-Gaither in our IDP rankings. Either remains worth a look at the end of your draft in deeper IDP leagues.
