The Chiefs entered Friday night's opener against the Chargers without WR Rashee Rice. Then they lost WR Xavier Worthy just three plays in. That left Marquise Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Tyquan Thornton as the team's top three WRs. Yet TE Travis Kelce managed to draw only four targets on 39 passes from QB Patrick Mahomes -- a 10.3% target share. Kelce salvaged his fantasy outing with a 37-yard TD on a well-designed play that left him wide open down the right sideline. His only other catch of the night went for 10 yards in the first quarter. He could have had another score late in the game, but he appeared to slow up on a crossing route, resulting in Mahomes' pass glancing off Kelce's fingertips.
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
This was a worrisome outing after a 2024 season that saw Kelce finish with career lows in multiple categories, including yards per catch, yards per target, and yards per route. The Chiefs needed him to step up without their top two WRs, but Kelce was nowhere to be found for large stretches of the game.
Instead it was Brown who was featured, drawing a whopping 16 targets. Even Smith-Schuster out-targeted Kelce five to four.
Granted, this was a tough matchup for Kelce against a Chargers defense that ranked first in adjusted fantasy points allowed to TEs last year. And Los Angeles was certainly keyed in on Kelce after Worthy exited.
But he's going to draw plenty of defensive attention in the short term. Rice is out for another five games, and there's a good chance that Worthy misses further time.
Plus, the schedule doesn't get any easier with matchups with the Eagles, Giants, and Ravens the next three weeks. Philadelphia and New York were both top-three TEs defenses last year, while the Ravens ranked 17th.
