Eagles Grab New No. 2 RB in Tank Bigsby?

        Tank Bigsby Headshot

The Jaguars are trading RB Tank Bigsby to the Eagles. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Philly's sending fifth- and sixth-round picks in the 2026 draft to Jacksonville.

That's a pretty hefty price for a backup RB, and it seems to tell us a couple of things about the Philly backfield:

        1. The rib injury that knocked Will Shipley out of last Thursday's win over the Cowboys must be significant.
        2. Philly doesn't love the idea of AJ Dillon seeing the field much.

Bigsby carried just five times and played 14 snaps in Jacksonville's opener. He has been rumored as a trade candidate for Weeks. I find it interesting that if the Eagles were willing to pay this much to get him, no other team with Not Saquon Barkley as its starter was willing to pay a similar price.

Bigsby, of course, won't climb past second on the Philly depth chart unless Barkley goes down. But he'd land in a high-upside position in that scenario.

        What They're Saying

Here's an update on our initial post ...

Brooks Kubena of The Athletic: "The Tank Bigsby trade is not related to Will Shipley's rib injury against the Cowboys last week, to my understanding. The Eagles like their RB room. They like Bigsby's effectiveness as a kickoff returner -- a role they've been exploring."

I don't doubt the return upside is part of it. Bigsby has averaged a nice 28.5 yards per kickoff return in the NFL so far. But two draft picks for a return man? I'm not buying it.

We'll see about Shipley's rib, but this trade at least stops Shipley from standing as the clear handcuff to Barkley.

        Other Winners & Losers

The whole Jacksonville backfield wins with Bigsby's departure.

Travis Etienne snagged the clear lead role Sunday, so this move means the least to him. The veteran should maintain that lead until/unless something changes.

Rookies Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen now face a shorter climb to relevance should Etienne go down. Tuten, in particular, should find a clearer path to a spot as the No. 2 rusher.

Allen saw his Week 1 time in passing-game roles.
