Bears RB Roschon Johnson was officially active for Sunday's game against the Lions, but you wouldn't know it from the box score. Johnson logged zero touches in his return after going inactive for the opener because of a foot injury. Rookie RB Kyle Monangai, meanwhile, carried seven times for 28 yards and caught one of three targets for 8 yards as the clear No. 2 back behind D'Andre Swift. The starter posted a 12-63-1 rushing line and caught all three of his targets for 6 yards.
What They're Saying
HC Ben Johnson after the Week 1 game, talking about Monangai: "I need to call more runs ... so that we can get him into the game a little bit more. that's something [RBs coach Eric Bienemy] and I have talked about, just making sure he has more carries going forward."
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
It's just one game, and Roschon Johnson has put in just one full practice across the first two weeks of the regular season. So this backfield's likely still taking shape.
But Ben Johnson's words combined with Sunday's actions sure seem to indicate that Monangai's at least ahead of Johnson on the RB depth chart for now.
Monangai's seven carries vs. 12 for backfield leader Swift also marked a sharp contrast vs. Week 1. Swift handled all 17 RB carries in that one, with Caleb Williams and D.J. Moore the only other Bears to run the ball.
We'll see what Ben Johnson has to say about his backfield ahead of a Week 3 home date with the Cowboys.
For now, there doesn't appear to be much reason to cling to Roschon Johnson on fantasy rosters unless you play in an especially deep league. Monangai makes sense as a handcuff type behind a fragile starter.
