The Chargers lost RB Najee Harris in the middle of the second quarter Sunday to a torn left Achilles' tendon. That allowed rookie RB Omarion Hampton to grab total backfield control in a game that found him racking up 25 touches and 129 total yards. Hampton ran 19 times for 70 yards and a TD. He added 6 receptions for 59 yards on seven targets in the narrow victory over the Broncos.
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
According to Pro Football Focus, Hampton played 29 snaps to 11 for Harris before the veteran's injury. After that, the rookie played 39 of the remaining 46 Chargers offensive snaps.
RB Hassan Haskins played the other seven snaps, all on passing plays.
Expect Hampton to continue similar backfield dominance going forward now that Harris is done for the year. And he should be a good bet for receiving production.
Hampton's target count obviously benefited from the Chargers throwing 47 passes against Denver, up from 27 and 34 the previous two games. His 15% target share also matched the collective backfield share from Week 2 (14.8%), up from a mere 8.8% in Week 1.
Hampton remained inefficient on the ground, averaging just 3.7 yards per rush against the Broncos. He had a pair of 11-yard runs, but also seven attempts that went for 1 yard or less (including a loss of 1 nullified by a defensive holding penalty).
The rookie's going to be a pretty easy weekly starter with his workload elevation the rest of the way. We'd still like to see the performance improve to maximize the upside.
He's likely to have to go without RG Mekhi Becton (concussion) for a Week 4 meeting with the Giants.
