The Jets are placing LB Quincy Williams on IR for the shoulder injury he suffered in Sunday's loss to the Buccaneers, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. That removes a key full-timer from the New York defense and replaces him with a lightly experienced former undrafted free agent.
What They're Saying
Cimini: "Williams was replaced by Marcelino McCrary-Ball, who plays predominantly on special teams. Williams is an every-down linebacker and tone-setter with sideline-to-sideline speed."
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
McCrary-Ball stepped in to play half the game Sunday after Williams left midway through. That seems to position the fill-in as a full-timer, though we'll see if that changes in his first start this week at Miami.
McCrary-Ball originally joined the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2022. This is now his third season with the Jets, and the 38 snaps he played in Week 3 account for 47.5% of his career total on defense. He played another 28 the week before, despite Williams and Jamien Sherwood each playing every snap.
The LB spent five years as a starting DB at Indiana, sandwiching a 2020 he lost to an ACL tear. He spent his final two years there as a team captain but never delivered particularly big numbers. McCrary-Ball floated primarily between slot corner and box safety.
The Jets still list him at just 6 feet tall and 214 pounds, extremely light for an NFL LB. We'll see if he can hold up to full-time duty and whether usable fantasy stats lie ahead.
Williams will miss at least the next four games on IR. His first eligible spot would be the week before the Jets' bye. That could motivate the team to hold him out a fifth game. We'll keep an eye on Williams' status as that draws nearer.
Williams should be OK to drop in most IDP leagues, though he's a fine stash where that makes sense.
