Steelers RB Kenneth Gainwell took over the starting RB duties with Jaylen Warren out this week with a calf injury. Gainwell proved effective with a 19-99-2 rushing stat line while also catching all six of his targets for 35 yards. He was surprisingly efficient averaging 5.2 yards per carry, carving up the Vikings defense.
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
Gainwell was far and away the lead back with Warren out. His 24 touches outpaced rookie RB Kaleb Johnson’s six (though it’s nice to know Johnson is ahead of Trey Sermon).
Gainwell had played 40.9% of the Steelers offensive snaps heading into Week 4 with Warren playing 60.8%. Against the Vikings, Gainwell played 77.4% of snaps. He was clearly in the lead role over Johnson.
The breakout game for veteran Gainwell could lead to more snaps (and touches) going forward, muddying the fantasy waters for any Steelers RB.
The Steelers offense continues to be centered around the run game. On Sunday, they ran 26 scripted runs vs. 25 dropbacks.
We will monitor any chatter about an increased role for Gainwell, but it might be smart to leave the Steelers RBs on the bench coming out of their bye week to confirm that Warren gets his full starting role back.
