Bears WR Luther Burden did not participate in Wednesday's training camp practice. The rookie was also sidelined for much of the spring with a hamstring injury. HC Ben Johnson said back in June that Burden would be ready for the start of camp. There have been no updates since then, though, so it's unclear if Burden suffered a setback or is dealing with a new injury.
It's a tough start for a rookie WR with a wide range of outcomes this season.
Burden was a polarizing prospect in the pre-draft process. He turned in a scintillating sophomore season at Missouri but was a major disappointment this past year. Burden is electric with the ball in his hands but has work to do in terms of route running and understanding defensive coverages.
The Bears took him with the 39th overall pick of this spring's draft, and HC Ben Johnson called him a "stud" in his post-draft press conference. There's clearly a chance for Burden to earn a significant 2025 role. But he needs to get on the field, especially amid a loaded pass-catching corps of D.J. Moore, Rome Odunze, Colston Loveland, and Cole Kmet.
We're not moving Burden in the WR rankings just yet but might start to inch him down if he remains sidelined into August. He should only be considered a late-round bench stash in fantasy drafts right now -- although the upside remains intriguing.
Consensus ADP finds Burden going in Round 13 as the 62nd WR off the board. That's plenty cheap to make him worth a gamble, even with this lingering injury. We'll see if this news lowers the price even further.
