Patriots new RBs coach Taylor Embree has been impressed by RB Rhamondre Stevenson's passing-game skills so far this offseason. Stevenson has averaged 4.8 targets and 3.7 catches per game over the last two years, although he's been just average in terms of efficiency. Stevenson ranked 18th among 43 qualifying RBs in yards per route in 2022 and then sunk to 27th out of 43 last year.
“Rhamondre is also a heck of a third-down running back. He can do it all. That’s how I like my running backs. Obviously, those are kind of unicorns,” Embree said. "I’m excited for him. He should have a big year.”
Stevenson is a good bet to lead the Patriots in carries this season. But the passing-down snaps in this backfield are seemingly up for grabs. Those are key to fantasy production, especially on a New England team that figures to be playing from behind quite a bit this year.
Embree also called RB Antonio Gibson "a top third-down back in this league" and even talked up RB Kevin Harris' ability in the passing game.
This will be a key situation to watch this summer. Stevenson will likely need to win the primary pass-catching role to pay off his current RB20 best-ball ADP. Gibson, meanwhile, could be a strong value at his RB50 price tag if he's able to capture passing-down snaps.
