        Courtland Sutton Quiet in Loss

Broncos WR Courtland Sutton managed only 4 catches for 38 yards in a Week 1 matchup at Seattle. Sutton led the team with 12 targets but struggled to click with rookie QB Bo Nix.

        What They're Saying

Here’s HC Sean Payton on his rookie QB, who completed 26 passes for only 138 yards, 0 TDs, and 2 INTs.

"He gave us a chance," Payton said. "I mean, our protection was average, at best. ... At one point in the game, I talked to the receivers, 'Hey, let's go.' I don't know how many drops we had, but man, let's help this guy."

Sutton dropped one pass against Seattle.

His overall volume was nice, but otherwise, the tape showed little to get excited about.

Here’s how his targets broke down beyond the drop:

        -Short range catch

        -Uncatchable

-Late end zone ball that was picked off

        -End zone ball thrown behind

-Catch and slip; missed YAC opportunity

-Incomplete, potential pass interference not called

        -Uncatchable

        -Uncatchable/miscommunication

-INT where Sutton seemed to slow up on a deep crosser

        -Short catch

        -Catch on a slant down to Seattle’s 4 yard-line

It's too early to make sweeping conclusions about Sutton's season-long outlook. But we'll certainly need the efficiency improve if he's going to crack WR3 range on a consistent basis.

Week 2 turns up another difficult matchup with CB Joey Porter Jr. and a strong Steelers defense.

        Other Winners & Losers

Late-round pick Devaughn Vele surprised with 8 targets, but he managed only 39 yards. Ultimately, there were no true winners with the way Bo Nix played. Josh Reynolds led the WR corps...with 45 yards.

It was Sutton (91%) and Reynolds (80%) who led the way in WR snaps. Vele came in third (49%), while summer sleeper Marvin Mims played only 17%. He garnered one target.

Overall, Nix funneled 12 targets to RBs/TEs.
