The NFL has yet to hand down any suspension for Chiefs WR Rashee Rice, but the team obviously needs to prepare for that possibility. SI.com's Albert Breer says the team is "expecting a suspension of Rice in the neighborhood of four to six games, and are ready for it." That time span lines up with other rumored expectations. Frankly, though, it seems odd that we still don't have anything official from the league, given that the initial infraction(s?) came early in the offseason before the 2024 campaign.
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
Breer points to JuJu Smith-Schuster and rookie Jalen Royals as potential slot replacements for Rice, and we've particularly seen plenty of buzz on Royals. He'd be easily the more interesting of the two, given that we already know Smith-Schuster's limitations.
Of course, either would need to prove he can draw a relevant number of targets in an offense with plenty of options. We'll also need to watch WR Marquise Brown's ankle issue -- which has kept him out since the end of July -- to determine whether he'll be ready for the opener.
We had been projecting two missed games for Rice but are bumping that up to four on this latest entry. Of course, we'll adjust further if the NFL delivers anything different.
I'd bet more heavily on fantasy drafters reacting too strongly to the Rice suspension (or its looming threat) rather than shrugging it off. So expect the third-year wideout to remain a value by our WR rankings.
It won't be difficult to draft WR insurance around him.
Other Winners & Losers
WR Xavier Worthy and TE Travis Kelce look like the top candidates for early-season spikes in usage and fantasy production. As long as you don't have to chase them too early, there's potential value to both players.
