The Buccaneers won't be placing LT Tristan Wirfs on IR, HC Todd Bowles said Sunday. That was mentioned as a possibility when Wirfs underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in early July -- and would have knocked him out for the first four games. Bowles added that Wirfs won't be ready for Week 1, but the team clearly expects him back before Week 5.
Bowles on Wirfs: "I wouldn’t say that it will be Week 1, but he’s definitely doing better."
Wirfs is one of the best OTs in the game, ranking ninth among 111 qualifying O-linemen in Pro Football Focus' 2024 blocking grades. His absence will be felt early this season, with Charlie Heck expected to be the replacement.
But getting Wirfs back before Week 5 is good news for QB Baker Mayfield and all of Tampa Bay's skill-position players. We'll keep you updated on Wirfs' progress and timetable for return.
