        Raiders release O.J. Howard

        8:27pm UTC 8/1/23

The Raiders released TE O.J. Howard. Once an exciting fantasy prospect, Howard's dynasty value is on life support. He's totaled just 24 catches in two seasons since tearing his Achilles. We'll see if the 28-year-old latches on elsewhere before Week 1. The Raiders move forward with Michael Mayer and Austin Hooper as their top two TEs.

        Hooper gets opportunity

        3:52pm UTC 3/22/23

The Raiders have agreed to a one-year, $2.75 million deal with TE Austin Hooper, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. The deal has a max value of $3.5 million. That's obviously not enough to guarantee a top role at the position. But Hooper's a better bet for receptions than new teammate TE O.J. Howard. Even so, he has averaged just 2.4 catches per game over the past two years, with two different teams. Neither Hooper nor Howard is likely to make a big fantasy football impact this year.

        Howard lands in Vegas

        8:37am UTC 3/21/23

The Raiders signed TE O.J. Howard to a one-year deal. The 2017 first-round pick has struggled since his 2020 Achilles tear, totaling just 24 catches across 30 games the past two seasons. Howard did average a big 14.5 yards per catch for the Texans last year -- but finished third among the team's TEs with just 10 catches. Howard at least finds opportunity in Las Vegas, where the Raiders traded away TE Darren Waller and have not at this point re-signed TE Foster Moreau. We'll see what the rest of the offseason brings. For now, consider Howard just a last-round flier in best-ball drafts.

        Jordan a healthy scratch

        11:36am UTC 11/13/22

Texans TE Brevin Jordan is a healthy scratch for today’s game vs. the Giants. That leaves Houston with TEs O.J. Howard, Jordan Akins and Teagan Quitoriano. This remains a situation to avoid in Week 10 fantasy lineups.

Texans TE Brevin Jordan (ankle) is listed as questionable for this weekend’s game vs. the Raiders. He put in full practices on Thursday and Friday, though, so we’re expecting him to play. Jordan will join O.J. Howard and Jordan Akins in Houston’s TE corps.

Texans TE Brevin Jordan (ankle) is out for Sunday’s game vs. the Jaguars. TE Pharaoh Brown was released earlier this week, so it’ll be O.J. Howard and Jordan Akins at TE on Sunday.

        Texans dump Brown

        2:45pm UTC 10/4/22

The Texans released TE Pharaoh Brown. He missed Week 4 with a shoulder injury but led Houston TEs in pass routes in Weeks 2 and 3. The Texans are now down to TE Brevin Jordan, who's missed the last 2 games with an ankle injury, TE O.J. Howard, who is coming off a 65% route rate and 14% target share this past week, and TE Jordan Akins. Howard is worth stashing in deeper fantasy leagues.

Texans TE Brevin Jordan (ankle) is out for Sunday's game vs. the Bears. TE Pharoah Brown (shoulder) is listed as questionable but put in a full practice on Friday and should play. We'll see if TE O.J. Howard gets a bigger role against Chicago, but you should avoid this situation in fantasy lineups.

        Don't believe Howard's 2 TDs

        3:20pm UTC 9/12/22

Texans TE O.J. Howard caught both of QB Davis Mills' TD passes in Sunday's tie with the Colts. He ran well behind the other 2 TEs in playing time, though. Howard spent just 12 snaps in the game, trailing Brevin Jordan's 40 and Pharaoh Brown's 45. Brown ran 16 routes to Howard's 6, with Jordan leading at 24. It was a great Week 1 for anyone who stashed Howard late in a best-ball draft, but don't consider it a reason to go pick him up.

        Texans add Howard

        8:44pm UTC 9/1/22

The Texans signed TE O.J. Howard. Once a promising fantasy prospect, Howard has totaled just 25 catches over the past 2 seasons and couldn't make a Bills team with nothing at TE behind Dawson Knox. We'll keep an eye on him, but Howard isn't a good bet for 2022 fantasy value. Brevin Jordan remains the TE to target in Houston.

        Bills cutting Howard

        8:25am UTC 8/30/22

The Bills are releasing TE O.J. Howard, according to multiple reports. This might be the end of NFL relevance for the once-promising former 1st-round pick who dealt with multiple significant injuries through his 5 years with the Bucs. Howard signed a 1-year deal with Buffalo this offseason but has been working behind lesser-known TEs throughout the preseason.

        Knox well ahead of Howard

        8:13am UTC 7/27/22

Bills TE Dawson Knox is "well ahead" of TE O.J. Howard based on the first few days of training camp, according to The Athletic's Joe Buscaglia. "Howard just hasn’t been a good pass catcher so far," Buscaglia writes. "Although he’s a good blocker, he’s not the best mover on routes and failed to secure a pair of catches he should have on Tuesday." There's still time for Howard to gain ground on Knox, but we'd only consider him a late-round option in TE-premium fantasy drafts at this point. Knox is fairly priced at his TE9 ADP.

        Howard the clear backup?

        12:57pm UTC 6/17/22

It doesn't sound like The Athletic's Joe Buscaglia expects O.J. Howard to push Dawson Knox for the Bills' starting TE job. "Howard has not looked like the dynamic pass catcher he was when he was a first-round pick out of Alabama in 2017," Buscaglia writes. "He also looks like he can be an excellent blocker for 12 personnel while still offering a pass-catching threat. But his movement skills are well below what Knox brings to the table." We'll keep an eye on this situation in August, but we bumped Knox up the TE Rankings and Howard down.

        Bills land Howard

        7:16pm UTC 3/16/22

The Bills signed TE O.J. Howard to a 1-year deal. It has a $3.5 million base value that can climb to $5 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The relative cheapness of the contract points to where Howard's career is at. The 19th overall pick of the 2017 draft dealt with ankle, foot and hamstring injuries over his first 3 seasons but averaged 15.5 yards per catch and scored 12 TDs. A torn Achilles ended his 2020 season in Week 4, though, and Howard caught just 14 balls behind Rob Gronkowski this past year. Still, he's just 27 with a strong pedigree. And he lands in a top-notch Bills offense. TE Dawson Knox is the incumbent in Buffalo, coming off a career-best 49-587-9 line in his 3rd season. But we imagine that this will be an open competition for the starting job this summer.
