Chargers OC Greg Roman said RB Omarion Hampton looked "spectacular" when the pads came on in training camp this week. That's not a surprise for a back whose game is built on downhill running and tackle-breaking ability. The 221-pound Hampton forced a missed tackle on 26.2% of his runs at North Carolina over the last two seasons.
Roman on Hampton's showing in contact work: "I thought it was spectacular. His ability to see the hole, find the hole. With the pads on, he seemed like he was even faster. He’s getting better every day. He keeps taking steps. He’s definitely gonna have a lot of opportunities to hit home runs, but we’ll take the singles, doubles, and triples, too."
Hampton is seemingly taking full advantage of RB Najee Harris' continued absence. The first-round rookie was always likely to play a significant role right away. But there's a better chance now that he dominates backfield work starting in Week 1.
We'll see if Hampton can keep this momentum going -- and when Harris is able to get back on the field.
