The 49ers have agreed to a contract amendment with WR Jauan Jennings that will add $3 million in playing time based incentives, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. That doesn't seem like much, but Schefter reports that Jennings "turned down a multi-year deal to do a one-year deal and bet on himself."
What They're Saying
Schefter: "Once Jauan Jennings got healthy and began recovering from his calf injury, negotiations with the 49ers picked up and resulted in an agreement."
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
The bit about Jennings turning down a multi-year deal actually looks more interesting than the incentive.
Tacking $3 million in play-time bonuses on a $7.5 million contract is kinda meh for a starting NFL receiver. But offering him more years says the 49ers were interested (to some degree) in keeping Jennings around.
But it's also worth noting that Jennings turned it down for this agreement and elected to hit unrestricted free agency for the first time ahead of his age-29 season. That says the San Francisco offer didn't impress him.
This guy presents a wide range of potential outcomes in 2025. It's good for him that San Francisco lacks proven answers at WR. But it can't be great for him that the team's not going out of its way to lock him up.
Jennings still makes sense as a low-end fantasy WR4. And if he gets to full playing time quickly, he could easily move into the top 36. But we'll see how soon the calf injury that cost Jennings all of August allows that.
Dynasty Impact
If you're holding Jennings in dynasty right now, this looks like the move: Wait for a big game, and then sell hard.
As I mentioned above, he'll be 29 when next season starts. And Jennings currently sports just one season with more than 35 catches. That followed a just-OK college career, which planted him in Round 7 of the 2020 NFL Draft.
