Vikings QB Carson Wentz will miss the rest of the season with a left shoulder injury that needs surgery, according to multiple reports. Wentz originally suffered the injury on Oct. 5 and has since been visibly bothered by it at points in every start.
What They're Saying
ESPN's Kevin Seifert on Wentz's Thursday night game against the Chargers in Week 8: "Wentz said it 'quite possibly' was the most pain he has been in during a football game. The Vikings' medical staff fitted him with several other protective wraps, in addition to the harness, which Wentz said he had never worn 'anything remotely close to' in order to play."
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
J.J. McCarthy served as the "emergency" third QB for that game against the Chargers and hasn't played since suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 2. Bet on the second-year QB retaking the starting job, though, for this Sunday's visit to the Lions.
The Vikings went 2-3 across Wentz's five starts, tallying 349+ total yards in four of those contests. They managed just 164 yards in the lopsided loss to the Chargers, though.
McCarthy's two appearances have similarly met with disappointing offensive play. We'll see whether he can progress in his return to the lineup, but don't expect big things at Detroit.
The following two weeks present much more favorable spots at home against the Ravens and Bears.
Although McCarthy himself is unlikely to become much of a fantasy factor, he'll need to improve his play to support the fantasy outlooks of WRs Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, and TE T.J. Hockenson.
