Packers QB Jordan Love is undergoing surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb, GM Brian Gutekunst announced. Love banged the non-throwing thumb on a helmet in Green Bay's preseason opener on Saturday. Gutekunst called it a "little procedure" and said Love "shouldn't miss any regular-season time." He added that the team is hoping to get Love back at practice next week.
More from Gutekunst: “From what I’ve been understanding, it’s relatively quick recovery. ... I don't see this affecting him long term."
This sounds like a truly minor procedure. And, considering it's Love's non-throwing thumb, it shouldn't impact his 2025 season as long as he's ready ahead of Week 1.
Still, it's not the best look for a guy who battled knee and groin injuries last year. This Packers passing game has also been without WR Dontayvion Wicks for part of camp, while WR Jayden Reed is currently in a walking boot.
Don't be surprised if the passing game gets off to a relatively slow start this season.
QB Malik Willis would be in line to start for the Packers if this or another injury keeps Love out. Willis made two starts for Green Bay last year and turned in QB22 and QB6 fantasy finishes. His per-game averages:
Willis would be starter-worthy in 2-QB and superflex leagues. But he'd be bad news for all of the Packers' pass catchers.
