Bears RB David Montgomery managed just five carries for 18 yards and 3 receptions for 19 yards (among three targets) in Sunday's OT win over the Giants. He trailed Jahmyr Gibbs by 10 carries and nine targets for the game.
The Giants matchup shaped up like a good spot for Montgomery. The visitor arrived not only as a weak run defense, but also a 10.5-point underdog.
But the Giants found the end zone on their first drive and scored the game's first 10 points. They staked another 10-point lead in the middle of the second quarter, and another early in the fourth quarter.
In fact, New York led from the 12:56 mark of the first quarter until a Jake Bates 59-yard FG tied the game with 28 seconds left in regulation.
Montgomery, meanwhile, got involved on Detroit's second possession and logged three more touches on the team's ensuing drive. But he finished the first half trailing Gibbs 9-2 in carries and 4-2 in targets and never gained on him.
For the game, Detroit dropped back on 65% of offensive plays. And Gibbs more than doubled his more plodding backfield mate in playing time.
Montgomery gets a worse matchup for his style with the Packers in Week 13, but a Week 14 home date with the Cowboys looks more favorable.
