The Dolphins announced that they will release QB Tua Tagovailoa at the start of the new league year this week. The move will cost Miami an NFL-record $99 million in dead money, split over this season and next. The Fins are hitting the 'reset' button under new GM Jon-Eric Sullivan and HC Jeff Hafley, cutting Tagovailoa and WR Tyreek Hill, among others, this offseason.
2026 Fantasy Football Impact
Tagovailoa compiled a 44-32 record with 120 TDs vs. 59 INTs across his six years in Miami. He had two strong seasons to open the Mike McDaniel era, averaging 8.5 yards per attempt across the 2022 and 2023 seasons. But Tua sank to 7.2 yards per attempt in 2024 and then 6.9 last year. He also threw a career-high 15 INTs on a career-worst 3.9% INT rate this past season.
The offset language in Tagovailoa's contract means that he'll play for his new team on the veteran minimum. But the best-case scenario likely has him battling for a starting job this summer.
Tagovailoa isn't worth a pick in 1-QB best-ball drafts right now. We'll see where he lands.
The Dolphins, meanwhile, will need to get creative at QB this year. They sit near the bottom of the league in 2026 cap space, even after dumping Tua.
The Fins will likely be in the mix for QB Kyler Murray. And SNY TV's Connor Hughes reports that QB Geno Smith's "preferred destination" is Miami.
We'll see who ends up under center for the Dolphins, but the QB situation is certainly a risk factor for RB De'Von Achane and WR Jaylen Waddle.
