Niners RB Jordan Mason carried 20 times for 100 yards and a TD in Sunday's loss at Minnesota. He drew nearly 100% of the RB rushing snare, with rookie RB Isaac Guerendo garnering just one attempt. WR Deebo Samuel took two other carries but lost 10 yards on his work. Mason added one catch for 4 yards on his lone target.
Former NFL CB Richard Sherman, after Week 1: "People saying he runs like Marshawn Lynch out there. My goodness, he does run with a very heavy hat. He runs downhill, he was punishing people all day."
HC Kyle Shanahan: "He does what he's been doing since he's been here. We've had two guys go down already, so I think it's pretty obvious to him he's the starter. That's the case."
Mason has reached 100 yards, scored, and averaged at least 5.0 yards per carry in each of his two starts to open this season.
He'll get at least three more chances to lead the backfield, with the Niners putting Christian McCaffrey on short-term IR. There's nothing scary about matchups with the Rams, Patriots, and Cardinals over that span.
Mason sits tied for the league lead in carries, with the Monday night game of Week 2 yet to play. His 48 rushes match Packers RB Josh Jacobs, with Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson just behind (46).
