49ers Allow Deebo Samuel to Seek Trade

By Matt Schauf | Updated on Sun, Feb 9 2025 9:15 PM UTC
        Deebo Samuel Headshot

ESPN reports that the 49ers have granted WR Deebo Samuel permission to seek a trade. It's reportedly the second time in three seasons that Samuel has made such a request. Samuel has one year remaining on his contract, with a $15.8 million cap hit, according to Spotrac. A $15.4 million option bonus that would pay out March 22 appears to set a deadline for a deal to happen.

        What They're Saying

Samuel, via ESPN's Adam Schefter: "It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle because of the relationship that we have. But I have to do what's best. I'm more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime but now I think it's best that we find another team."

        2025 Fantasy Football Impact

Samuel endured a tough 2024 season that included the lowest receiving success rate and fewest receiving yards per game of his career.

As Jared pointed out our recent podcast, though, Samuel was on track for better production before a midseason bout with pneumonia.

He just turned 29 in January, which keeps him well within the traditionally productive portion of a good WR's career -- according to our aging-curve research.

Expect Samuel to find a new suitor. Treat him and other current 49ers WRs as though he has moved on.

        Other Winners & Losers

Samuel's impending departure sets up opportunity for WRs Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall.

Brandon Aiyuk figures to see available target share as well but must prove he's back from his October ACL tear.

        Projected ADP Movement

Here's how the other three Niners WRs rank in current Underdog Fantasy ADP:

        • Aiyuk WR40
        • Jennings WR44
        • Pearsall WR47

All three look like fine values at that level, with Jennings arguably the top target for current best ball drafting.

He leads the other two in our early WR rankings, across formats.
