Buccaneers HC Todd Bowles was non-committal on WR Chris Godwin's availability for the start of the season when asked on Wednesday. Godwin is working his way back from last October's dislocated ankle and needed a second surgery this spring. "Don’t know for sure," Bowles said of Godwin's Week 1 status. "I’m hopeful."
More from Bowles on Godwin: “He’s coming along great. He’s on track. We gotta see what the process is to get out on the field and do some things. So, we’ll continue to listen to the doctors and the trainers. He’s in great spirits, as well. Again, I don’t have a timeline on that, but hopefully it will be soon.”
This isn't the first time this offseason that the Bucs regime has expressed uncertainty about Godwin's availability for the start of the season. But it's the first time we've heard from the team since news of the second surgery.
We're still more than six weeks away from the season opener, and Godwin is an established veteran who can afford to miss practice time. But it certainly seems like there's a real chance he misses the start of the year. At minimum, fantasy owners should expect him to get off to a slow start.
We still have Godwin projected to play Week 1 for now, but we trimmed his early-season projections. That knocked him a few spots down the WR rankings.
