Lions HC Dan Campbell said Friday that TE Sam LaPorta had back surgery and that his chances of returning this season are "very, very slim." We'll look for more details on LaPorta's injury and whether it'll impact his 2026, but he can be dropped from all redraft rosters.
2025 Fantasy Football Impact
This is a significant loss for Detroit's offense. In his nine games, LaPorta had accounted for:
- 17.8% of the team's targets
- 19.7% of the catches
- 23.0% of the receiving yards
- 14.3% of the receiving TDs
Brock Wright took over as the Lions' clear top TE with LaPorta out last week, running a route on 64% of pass plays. He drew seven targets on an 18.9% share -- but caught just two for eight yards. We don't expect Wright to see that type of target share going forward. He'll remain stuck in TE2 territory.
WRs Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams should pick up extra targets with LaPorta out. And RB Jahmyr Gibbs will also likely benefit from LaPorta's absence, as I outlined in this week's Usage Takeaways.
